AMO Profile/Steve Barber, CPM
Invest West Management
By Cliff Hockley, CPM AMO Chapter Chair
Invest West Management was founded in 1979 by the illustrious Steve Barber. Steve had been employed at PMSI where he obtained his CPM in 1977. He has just celebrated his 25th year as a Certified Property Manager (CPM). Invest West manages apartments, commercial properties, and condominium and homeowner associations and is involved in the brokerage of commercial properties. Invest West is licensed in both Oregon and Washington.
Steve was born in Enterprise, Oregon and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University in 1969. He and his wife, Mary, have two children, Michelle and Christopher. Christopher is responsible for all of the homeowner association business at Invest West.
What is remarkable about Invest West is not only Steve's depth of knowledge, but also his low employee turnover. He recently had two employees retire with 20 years of service. It is Steve's gentle manner, smart professionalism, and probably his love of sailing, which keeps him out of the office, that has made for a successful AMO company.
Steve is very involved with the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM). He was president of the Oregon Columbia River Chapter in 1984 and received the CPM of the Year Award in 1987 and 2001. The company received the AMO of the Year Award in 1996. He currently teaches the IREM Ethics 800 course and has chaired the National Ethics Inquiry and Appeal Boards for over nine years. He served as regional vice president for region 12 from 1994 to 1995 and is presently the ARM coordinator as well as our membership chair for our local chapter.
His goals as the president of an AMO firm include continuing the family business, respecting his employees and his clients, having a good time, and keeping his company on the cutting edge of the industry. He credits his involvement with IREM for keeping him ahead of the competition.
